Originally
a sleepy Mayan fishing village, Puerto Morelos offers a local, friendly
alternative to the raucous, big-city atmosphere of Cancun or congestion
of Playa del Carmen.
Visitors
to this quaint little town seem to be interested in spending much more
time on holiday, perhaps 4-5 weeks, even months, and can enjoy healthy
diversions such as local yoga retreats.
Many
come for artistic endeavors, such as painting or photography, finding
creative inspiration in the natural beauty and peaceful, serene surroundings.
The tranquil white-sand beaches protected by a beautiful barrier reef
provide a safe swimming and water activities environment not found in
Cancun, where strong currents frequently put swimmers at risk. The coral
reef is alive with diverse and colorful marine life. Located just kilometers
off shore, this unique ecosystem is easily accessible by local dive
operators who run tours providing superb scuba diving.
Sport fishing is also popular here, with annual Marlin tournaments attracting
multi-national participation.
The
many family restaurants surrounding the town square offer fare ranging
from locally caught fresh fish and seafood such as lobster, conch, and
octopus, to Italian cuisine featuring pasta and pizza, to superb Argentinean
steaks.
In
addition, the town offers all the typical amenities such as a pharmacy,
general store, liquor store, money exchange facilities, travel agencies,
a gas station, rental car shop, book store, scuba shops, and gift stores.
Close
proximity to the international airport only 20 minutes away make this
destination very desirable. This region is centrally located between
Cancun and Playa del Carmen, making excursions to these fun spots, or
to the vast number of Mayan ruins in the region relatively easy. The
new four-lane divided highway makes travel along the coast safe and
convenient.
